“Are You for Real?” AfroFuturistic Cultural Program – 4-11 July, Lisbon

From 4-11 July, AFRICA.CONT/CML and Queer Lisboa join together for a very special cultural series called “Are You for Real?”. This afrofuturistic trip of Blaxploitation, Queer Sonic and Visual Utopias genres play out via film screenings, installations, performances, voguing workshops, a book presentation, and the presence of several international guests, including the effervescent Vaginal Davis.



Are you for real - cartaz This program, curated by Pedro Marum and Ricke Merighi, aims to shed a light on the blaxploitation and afrofuturistic aesthetics and philosophy of musician Sun Ra (1914-1993), one of the movements’ most vibrant voices. , exploring issues related to race, gender and sexuality, under a queer perspective. Isaac Julien’s oeuvre will be one of the highlights, with the exhibition of five of his films.

Venues for “Are You for Real?” include Portuguese Cinematheque, Galeria Zé dos Bois, c.e.m. and Fontória Blues Caffe in Lisbon.
