Every year, the Arco-Iris (Rainbow) Awards, an initiative of ILGA Portugal, celebrate personalities and institutions who have made a difference in the fight against discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. The 12th edition of the awards ceremony is scheduled for Saturday, 10 January at the Teatro do Bairro in Lisbon.

Sadly, homophobia and hostile attitudes toward lesbian, gay bisexual and transgender individuals can still be found in families, schools, workplaces and society, in general. ILGA Portugal works to address these issues through various programs and projects; but real impact and strides are achieved when community members, industry leaders, celebrities and institutions lend their voice and support.

This year’s honorees include:

António SimõesPortuguese banking executive, currently Chief Executive UK for HSBC and open gay man.

Daniela MercuryPortuguese-Brazilian singer, songwriter, record-producer and popular international entertainer.

UNICEF Portugal & Institute de Apoio à Criançafor supporting children in the governments debates on co-adoption.

Municipality of Lisbonfor their Action Plan on Social Rights.

“Gisberta” – a stage play by Eduardo Gaspar, portraying the pain of a mother who lost a daughter as well as the power of transphobic prejudice.

Portuguese Council for Refugeesfor granting refugee status to those who are the object of persecution on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity.

Radio and television personality Ricardo Araújo Pereira will be the master of ceremonies for the show. Pop singer David Fonseca provides entertainment.
